The 2008/9 Club Championship Tournament was played
in perfect weather and on grass courts in their
best condition at this time of year. Only members
without a decent excuse were allowed to escape
Peter Rigg's attention, and the round robin events
were most popular. A husband and wife teamed up,
contrary to best advice, and didn't lose a match in
the mixed. Congratulations to Rob and Ann Parker,
who are still walking, and talking to each other.
Jane Bolton and Tony Cull, in their first
tournament, managed to dislodge Dave Pyett from his
position as winner of the division 1 mixed 2 years
in a row. Ian and Adrienne Meares managed shorter
matches this year, due to the absence of Chris
Allen who is still injured. We look forward to
having you back Chris.

The queens of midweek tennis, Vicki and Jane, were
unbeaten in the Women's round robin and also
victorious against Debbie and Loretta in the Open
Plate. Judy and Sue won the Red Group, with Glenda
and Liz taking the Blue. Gary Geelhoed and his
substitute partner, Mal McCloskey, took the Men's
round robin, after a false start due to AMA
interviews, closely followed by Rob Tucker and
Jeremy Cariss. Jeremy played after very little
sleep, due to being the owner of the prestigious
Bistro Felix restaurant in Subiaco. We look forward
to a delicious dinner with you soon, Jeremy. Jim
and Paul were conquering kings of the Blue group,
and will have to suffer promotion next year. Ian,
and his young gun partner, Sam Flynn, beat Jim and
Gianluca in the Men's Div 1, and Ian also snuck
past Gianluca in the div 1 singles.

Despite, organising and attending his brother's
buck's night on Saturday (and losing wallet, phone
and keys), Goran Marijan recovered to make a hat
trick in the Open Singles, Doubles and Mixed
events. He was ably carried by Marisa in the Mixed
and Dylan in the Men's. Sam and Scotty fought
bravely, but the youngsters ascended. Marisa also
scored in the Women's Open with Cassie and reigned
supreme in the singles, against a fit Emma Tullett,
who usually rode or jogged to the club for 2/3
consecutive matches.

The crowd on the verandah, surrounded by buckets of
cold champagne, and nibbles (thank you Debbie),
clapped and cheered through exciting matches and
amazing points every afternoon for 4 days. They
even transported chairs and glasses to the hard
courts to watch a tight semi-final tie-break under
lights between Mabs and Candice against Jesse and
Simone. Scintillating tennis girls.

Shiny trophies and prizes will be distributed at a
function on 8th May 2009. Mark your
diaries!

Thank you everyone for your participation. For most
of us, the club champs is an opportunity to play
against people that we don't usually come across,
and enjoy the challenge. Without competitors a race
does not have a winner.

- Loretta Hughes.
